The next monthly meeting of the Comox Valley Writers Society is on Thursday, March 12, 2020 in the library at Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School, 1551 Lerwick Rd, Courtenay. Meeting begins at 7 p.m.

Guest speaker this month is Diana Stevan. She will discuss how she used family history and other research to write her novel, Sunflowers Under Fire, a historical fiction, a finalist for the 2019 Whistler Independent Book Award and a semi-finalist for a 2019 Kindle Award for Literary Fiction. Diana will read from her novel and there will be time for a Q & A session.

January 16, 2020 – Kim Bannerman

The next monthly meeting of the Comox Valley Writers Society is on Thursday, January 16, 2020 in the library at Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School, 1551 Lerwick Rd, Courtenay. Meeting begins at 7 p.m.

Guest speaker this month is local author Kim Bannerman. She will talk about Sense of Place, building a rich world for the reader to experience. Setting has a huge influence for a story. It guides our use of language and emotions.

Kim’s talk will focus on her research of Cumberland history for Bucket of Blood, Harrison Hot Springs for Agony of St. Alice and the creation of the fantasy landscape in Love & Lovecraft.

Kim has a background in anthropology and travel writing. She has written four books and is a partner in Fox&Bee Studio. She has a website: foxandbee.com and is on Facebook. Kim lives in Cumberland.

Members are to write a short piece about a place or landscape they enjoy or love and bring it to the January 16th meeting.

December 12, 2019 – Christmas Party

The next monthly meeting of the Comox Valley Writers Society is on Thursday, December 12, 2019 in the library at Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School, 1551 Lerwick Rd, Courtenay. New members and guests are welcome. Meeting begins at 7 p.m.

Write a one page story that includes the following:
            Character: Oddities collector
            Plot line: Reckless enthusiasm

December Guest Speaker will be Eden Robinson. She is the Haig-Brown Heritage House Writer-in-Residence this year. A B.C. writer Eden Robinson has published novels, poems and short stories. Robinson’s work, infused with dark humour, portrays the everyday lives of Indigenous people in coastal B.C. Her Kitimat-set debut novel, Monkey Beach, received a nomination for the 2000 Scotiabank Giller Prize. In 2017, Son of a Trickster, a coming of age novel, was a finalist for that year’s Scotiabank Giller Prize.

November 21, 2019 – Dr. Mary Lindsay (Mei-Li-Lee)

The next monthly meeting of the Comox Valley Writers Society is on Thursday, November 21, 2019 in the library at Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School, 1551 Lerwick Rd, Courtenay. New members and guests are welcome.

Guest speaker this month is Dr. Mary Lindsay (Mei-Li-Lee). Dr. Lindsay, a former teacher and educational psychologist in S.D. #71.

She will also be reading from her historical novel Potlatch Blanket for a China Man on Wednesday, November 20 at 6:30 at the Courtenay Library. Unlike other accounts set in British Columbia, this novel privileges non-European perspectives and celebrates the complex alliances among Chinese, First Nations, Blacks, Hawaiians, Mexicans and women. Voice is given to marginalized communities that are not represented in history books. Everyone is welcome to either event.

At our October meeting we heard readings from our Crime/Mystery small writing group. Members read excerpts from their current writing projects. This group is very popular and may need to expand into a second group.
