Next CVWS meeting – Dec. 12, 2019

The next monthly meeting of the Comox Valley Writers Society is on Thursday, December 12, 2019 in the library at Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School, 1551 Lerwick Rd, Courtenay. New members and guests are welcome. Meeting begins at 7 p.m.

Write a one page story that includes the following:
            Character: Oddities collector
            Plot line: Reckless enthusiasm

December Guest Speaker will be Eden Robinson. She is the Haig-Brown Heritage House Writer-in-Residence this year. A B.C. writer Eden Robinson has published novels, poems and short stories. Robinson’s work, infused with dark humour, portrays the everyday lives of Indigenous people in coastal B.C. Her Kitimat-set debut novel, Monkey Beach, received a nomination for the 2000 Scotiabank Giller Prize. In 2017, Son of a Trickster, a coming of age novel, was a finalist for that year’s Scotiabank Giller Prize.

2020 NIWC Pre-Conference Extravaganza – Nov. 29, 2019

Presented by North Island College and CVWS  

On Friday, November 29th, as part of the NIC Write Here Reading Series, presenters from the 2020 North Island Writers Conference will be reading excerpts from their work.

The author line-up includes: Jayne Barnard, Jeanette Taylor, Jennifer Manuel, Jo-Anne McLean, Judy LeBlanc, Marlet Ashley, Michelle Simms, Paula Wild, Terrance James, and Traci Skuce.

The event is scheduled for 6:30 – 9 pm at the Stan Hagen Theatre, North Island College, Comox Valley campus.  Refreshments will be served at intermission. The event is free and open to everyone.

Next Prose and Poetry – Nov. 29, 2019

The next Poetry and Prose Open Mic session will be held on Friday, November 29, 2019 from 12 – 2 p.m. in the Events Room at the Courtenay Regional Library.

Come to read or to listen. Everyone is welcome.

Note: There is no Poetry and Prose session in December. The next one will be on Friday, January 31, 2020.

Book signing – Leslie Cox – Nov. 17, 2019

Leslie Cox will be signing her first, self-published book, Duchess of Dirt: The Record Years, on Sunday, November 17.

Place: Laughing Oyster Bookshop, 286 5th Street
Time: 1 – 3 p.m.

It is Customer Appreciation Day and First Sunday Opening at Laughing Oyster Bookshop. Come join the fun!

Next CVWS meeting – Nov. 21, 2019

The next monthly meeting of the Comox Valley Writers Society is on Thursday, November 21, 2019 in the library at Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School, 1551 Lerwick Rd, Courtenay. New members and guests are welcome.

Guest speaker this month is Dr. Mary Lindsay (Mei-Li-Lee). Dr. Lindsay, a former teacher and educational psychologist in S.D. #71.

She will also be reading from her historical novel Potlatch Blanket for a China Man on Wednesday, November 20 at 6:30 at the Courtenay Library. Unlike other accounts set in British Columbia, this novel privileges non-European perspectives and celebrates the complex alliances among Chinese, First Nations, Blacks, Hawaiians, Mexicans and women. Voice is given to marginalized communities that are not represented in history books. Everyone is welcome to either event.

At our October meeting we heard readings from our Crime/Mystery small writing group. Members read excerpts from their current writing projects. This group is very popular and may need to expand into a second group.

Next CVWS meeting – June 20, 2019

The next monthly meeting of the Comox Valley Writers Society is on Thursday, June 20, 2019 in the library at Mark R. Isfeld Secondary School, 1551 Lerwick Rd, Courtenay.

Guests will be Phyllis Long and Vera Jansen, the last two remaining original Writers Group members from 1964, the year our club was formed. Terry James will conduct an interview with these ladies at the meeting and a Question & Answer session will follow.

It is also our Annual General Meeting! The executive will give their year end reports and the Election of Officers for the 2019 – 2020 year will be held. If you wish to submit a nomination or volunteer to run for Office, please contact the Nominating Committee at lkkennedy@hotmail.com.

Guest Speaker will be Mel Dagg, author of the novel Passage on the Cardena and short story collections – Four Wheel Drive, Women on the Bridge and Same Truck, Different Driver.

Mel will present “The Accidental Writer” and address:

  2. Do writers have to rely on their own experience for material?
  3. Thoughts on First Person Voice
